Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year. Fifth grade math is a class that focuses on building number sense and problem-solving skills in the minds of the students. I will push students to think independently and build strong academic habits that will help them to find success both in school and in life.
The Critical Areas of 5th Grade Math
-Analyze patterns and relationships.
-Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers.
-Perform operations with decimals to hundredths.
-Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and divide fractions.
-Represent and interpret data.
-Understand concepts of volume and relate volume to multiplication and to addition.
-Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties.
Materials Needed for Class:
Classroom Expectations:
***Students will not be permitted to use cell phones in my class. If a student is caught using a cell phone in class, it will be confiscated, and the policies laid out in the student code of conduct handbook will be followed.***
Middle School Behavior Systems:
We have developed a middle school behavior system to be used in each classroom. Students are expected to exemplify leadership throughout the day and make positive choices that will lead them to be successful leaders.
Middle School Expectations:
Be prepared and on time
Come in quietly; get on task
Respect yourself, others, and your environment
Make wise choices with P.R.I.D.E.
Students who do not follow the expectation of Middle School students will have consequences. Consequences are as follows:
1st Check: Verbal warning
2nd Check: Behavior Log
3rd Check: Call/email home
4th Check: Detention and communication w/parents
Homework:
Homework will be a component of this class. It is a way for students to practice responsibility and accountability, as well as practice their math skills.
It is the responsibility of the student to collect any missed assignments after an absence and complete them in a timely fashion. Students will be given as many days to turn in work as they were absent. For example, if a student is absent for two days, they can turn in an assignment two days after the due date.
Late assignments will receive a 10% reduction in the grade for each day that it is late, up to three days. Late or missing assignments will only be accepted until the end of the unit.
Communication:
The best way to reach me is via email at [email protected]. I will do my best to respond to your email as soon as possible, which usually is within the same day.
South Loop Grading Scale:
A
100%-90%
B
